Table of Contents
Compare the international gold reference in Chinese yuan while keeping Shanghai exchange contracts, retail jewellery and specific bullion products distinct.
An International CNY Reference and the Shanghai Market
The China dashboard expresses international gold spot in Chinese yuan. It is useful for a consistent currency-and-weight comparison, but it is not a direct Shanghai Gold Exchange quotation. A conversion of a USD reference does not reproduce every feature of a domestic exchange contract, a bank’s bullion offer or a retail jewellery price.
The Shanghai Gold Exchange publishes its own benchmark information, and its physical-contract pages identify products such as Au99.99 and Au100g. Before comparing an exchange figure with the dashboard, match the contract, purity, quotation time and unit. A familiar gold symbol is not enough to establish that two prices describe the same transaction.
Price per Gram and Price per Finished Item
For a per-gram jewellery comparison, establish the stated gold fineness and the net weight used by the seller. If a product is sold at a fixed price per item, divide the complete amount by its fine-gold content only as a comparison exercise. The resulting premium may include design, manufacturing or other product characteristics, so it is not a standalone measure of quality.
For a commemorative coin, read the exact issue’s weight specification. A coin described in grams should not be assumed to contain one troy ounce. The dashboard uses 31.1034768 grams for a troy ounce, so a product with another gram weight needs its own conversion. Apply purity once to the relevant alloy weight, or use the stated fine-gold weight directly.
Shanghai Trading Dates and Historical Charts
SGE’s daily reports distinguish contracts and market fields such as open, close and weighted average. They also explain that a trading day can include a session from the preceding working day. That is why a Shanghai market report’s date should not be treated as an arbitrary midnight snapshot or automatically compared with a website’s last daily observation.
For Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen or Guangzhou jewellery, distinguish a weight-priced item from an item sold at one fixed total. Dividing the latter’s complete price by its actual gold content can expose the additional amount attached to design or manufacture, but it cannot authenticate the item or determine what a buyer will later pay for that design.
For an intended resale, obtain the dealer’s buying terms before purchasing. Confirm accepted brands and specifications, packaging requirements, any testing method and the basis for deductions. A chart of the underlying metal cannot determine the amount paid for a particular branded jewellery item or a collectible coin.
Worked Product Comparison: 30 Grams and a Troy Ounce
Hypothetical same-fineness comparison: at CNY 900 per gram of the stated fine-gold quantity, 30 grams corresponds to CNY 27,000. A troy ounce uses 31.1034768 grams and corresponds to about CNY 27,993.13. The difference of about CNY 993.13 follows from the extra 1.1034768 grams.
A 30-gram product is therefore not a one-ounce product with an unusually low price. First convert the actual stated fine-gold content, then calculate the product premium. If a coin specification states fine-gold content directly, do not reduce that figure for fineness again.
The same discipline applies when reading Shanghai contract information: use that contract’s unit, purity and defined price field before comparison. This illustration supplies no SGE settlement, retail-brand quote or current coin offer.
FAQs
Is the China Dashboard a Shanghai Gold Exchange Feed?
It displays an international gold reference converted into CNY. SGE publishes separate benchmark information. To compare the two, identify the exchange contract and timestamp instead of treating every yuan-denominated gold quotation as the same market observation.
What do Au99.99 and Au100g Refer to?
They are among the contracts described in SGE’s physical-market information. A contract name has its own specifications and trading conditions. Do not assume its quote is identical to the retail price of a similarly described bar or jewellery item.
Why can a Shanghai Reference Differ from Converted USD Spot?
The series may represent different market locations, product specifications and observation times. Currency conversion also needs a defined basis. Match those details first; the difference should not automatically be described as an error or as a jeweller’s profit.
Is the Yuan Figure a Price for Every Chinese Jewellery Brand?
No. It is a metal reference. A brand’s complete price can reflect its design, construction, sales terms and charges. Ask for a current quotation for the exact item, with the stated gold weight and fineness, before comparing it with the dashboard.
How can I Compare a Fixed-Price Pendant with per-Gram Jewellery?
Obtain the pendant’s net gold weight and fineness, then calculate its fine-gold quantity. Compare the complete item price with that metal reference. Keep stones, design and workmanship separate so a per-gram comparison does not imply the products are identical.
Does a 30-Gram Coin Contain One Troy Ounce?
No. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Use the exact coin’s specified fine-gold content or its weight and fineness, as appropriate. Do not value a 30-gram product as one ounce simply because both are familiar bullion sizes.
Can a Shanghai Trading Day Include the Previous Evening?
SGE’s daily-report notes describe a trading-day convention that can include a session from the preceding working day. Read the exchange date definition before comparing it with a calendar-day snapshot, particularly around holidays.
Are SGE’s Close and Weighted Average the Same Price?
They are different statistical fields. A close identifies a closing observation under the report’s convention, while a weighted average combines eligible trading observations with weights. Check the exact field used by the source before comparing historical changes.
What should a Beijing Gold-Shop Quotation Show?
Ask for the retailer’s name, observation time, product weight, fineness and complete selling amount. A displayed local observation should identify those terms. The international CNY reference offers separate metal context and should not be relabelled as the shop’s own transaction price.
Can I Treat a 9999 Description as Proof of Authenticity?
The declared fineness is one part of the product specification. Check the item, seller, identifying details and available authentication procedure together. A price calculator accepts a purity assumption; it cannot physically verify a bar or jewellery item.
Will Retail Jewellery Follow a Gold Chart Percentage Exactly?
The chart tracks its metal series. A retail item’s complete price and resale offer may also include workmanship, product premiums and dealer terms. Compare dated quotes for the same product before assuming its commercial value moved by the same percentage.
Why Keep Exchange History Separate from the International Archive?
They use different observations and may have different frequencies, contracts and price definitions. Combining them without distinction could create an artificial jump or trend. Select the named series that answers your comparison and keep its date and unit consistent.
