Spot Gold, Bullion and Jewellery in us Dollars

The US dollar dashboard gives a reference for gold content. A retail bar, a bullion coin, a collectible proof and a used jewellery item are four different transactions. Before comparing their prices, identify the exact product and whether you are buying it or asking a dealer to buy it from you. A single spot figure cannot supply all four executable prices.

For a bar or coin advertised as containing one troy ounce of fine gold, compare the seller’s complete price with the one-ounce pure-gold reference. For jewellery, use the item’s gold-bearing weight and karat instead. The distinction matters for alloyed bullion coins: the US Mint bullion specifications show that a one-ounce Gold Eagle is 22K and weighs more than one troy ounce overall because it includes additional alloy metals.

Understand the Premium and the Exit Price

A premium is the amount above the reference metal value that a buyer pays for a particular product. Manufacturing, distribution, product availability and the seller’s margin can affect it. To compare offers, calculate both the dollar premium and the percentage premium, then include shipping, payment fees and any applicable tax in the final total. The cheapest advertised product price may not give the lowest delivered cost.

Ask for a current buyback quotation at the same time as the selling quotation. The difference is more informative than an isolated promise of a low premium. Confirm whether the offer depends on an intact assay package, a particular mint, a minimum quantity or a specific payment method. Written terms are especially useful when a website locks a price before the payment settles.

A Named Supplier’s Gold Buffalo Quotation

The separate supplier table can show AJPM’s published buying and selling prices for its one-ounce Gold Buffalo. Read the coin specification and transaction side together: a supplier’s selling price is the amount quoted to a purchaser, while its buying price applies when the supplier buys the coin. These product quotations are not a Portland-wide market rate. Where a publication time is absent, the table identifies when the source was collected instead.

Keep any collectible or product premium and transaction charges separate from the international metal reference. AJPM’s published order terms govern its confirmation, payment and shipping process. Jewellery Markings and City Comparisons

The FTC guide to precious-metal jewellery explains karat markings and the difference between gold alloys and plated products. Gold-filled, gold-plated and vermeil descriptions do not mean the whole item can be valued as solid gold at that surface karat. Identify the actual construction before entering the gross weight into a metal calculator.

For New York, Los Angeles or Houston offers, separate the product price from delivery and payment terms. A cash-pickup quote, a card-funded online order and an insured shipment can produce different payable totals for the same coin. State sales-tax treatment depends on the actual transaction; the calculator does not infer it from the city name. Check the seller’s completed checkout or invoice before deciding which offer costs less.

Worked Example: a One-Ounce Gold Eagle Premium

The US Mint’s specifications distinguish a Gold Eagle’s stated fine-gold content from the additional alloy in its total weight. For the one-ounce gold version, use one troy ounce of fine gold with the pure-metal reference. Do not take the stated gold content and reduce it to 22/24 again.

Hypothetical prices: with a USD 3,000 one-ounce metal reference and a USD 3,180 coin offer, the product premium is USD 180, or 6%. If insured delivery costs USD 25 and a payment fee is USD 10, the pre-tax delivered amount becomes USD 3,215. The USD 215 difference from metal value includes those transaction costs; it is not entirely the coin’s quoted premium.

For a ring, the inputs change. Six grams of nominal 14K alloy contains 3.5 grams of gold; six grams of nominal 10K contains 2.5 grams. The new 14K and 10K settings calculate those fractions directly from the alloy weight. This example supplies no state tax estimate or executable dealer price.
