Buying Gold and Selling Gold Use Different Quotes

A dealer’s selling rate applies when you buy from it. Its buying rate applies when you sell to it. Put both sides beside the same product and weight before assessing the difference. A price board can show a narrow metal spread while a small transaction still carries additional charges.

TANAKA’s published table identifies separate retail selling and buying prices per gram. It labels both tax-inclusive and states that small-bar charges or commissions are excluded. Those terms belong to that dealer’s quotation; another dealer’s tax or fee basis must be checked separately.

For a planned purchase and later resale, compare the complete initial cost with the net sale proceeds. The percentage movement of an underlying gold chart does not include all the costs of that transaction.

Small-Bar Fees and the Complete Price

TANAKA’s fee guidance distinguishes a charge per bar on retail purchases from a fee based on the combined weight of each metal type on a sale. It also tells customers that the schedule can change. Check the current terms for the exact bar size and transaction rather than treating a 10-gram calculator result as an all-inclusive bar price.

Hypothetical purchase: assume a tax-inclusive selling rate of ¥20,000 per gram and a separately quoted tax-inclusive charge of ¥7,000 for a 10-gram bar.

The extra charge is 3.5% of the metal amount in this example. It is not a quoted TANAKA fee. Compare another bar size using its own total charge and actual gold weight. Adding tax again to an explicitly tax-inclusive amount would count it twice.

K18, K24 and Japanese Fineness Marks

K18 denotes 18-karat gold, equivalent to a nominal 75% gold share. Japan Mint’s fineness material uses parts per thousand; 750 therefore represents the same mathematical proportion. A K24 description calls for checking the exact product fineness rather than assuming every item has an identical specification.

An 8-gram K18 ring has a nominal fine-gold quantity of 8 × 0.75 = 6 grams, provided the stated weight is all gold alloy. Use either 8 grams with the 18K reference or 6 grams with the pure-metal reference. Keep the weight of any stone separate.

A published dealer-network rate can be shared by several cities. Ask whether the quotation applies to the branch you plan to visit and whether the same product and transaction method are available there. The complete price remains the relevant comparison.

For Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama or Nagoya offers, record the dealer, date, transaction side, product weight and additional charges. Compare a bar purchase with a bar purchase and a jewellery resale with a jewellery resale. The city label does not make these different transactions interchangeable.
